The science of stereotomy

Dear reader,

Following last year’s footsteps, MGI continues to explore new methodologies of fabrication and design
application with natural stone; this time the idea of a workshop came from Prof. Giuseppe Fallacara of    the Politecnico di Bari, one of stereotomy ’s (the art of cutting and assembling stone into complex
structures for architectural purposes) leading experts. The result of our workshop was revealed to the
public during the 2014 Marmomacc in Verona, inside the exhibit called Stereotomic Design.

During a recent interview I took with him, here is what Prof. Fallacara says about
this project:
“The interaction between steel and stone allows the latter to seem so light as almost ready to  take flight. This is particularly true in our most
recent work, what we called Parabolithic: Sail; the project is part of a series of experiments to investigate complex geometries (such as
double curvature surfaces), applied to natural stone.
As the name itself suggests, our structure resembles an hyperbolic paraboloid
through the use of triangular shaped pieces of Caldia marble, held together by a steel frame. This bond creates an extraordinary architectural solution where stone loses its weight, in a  perfect balance of traction and compression
forces”.
